History

At Allithwaite Primary School, history is a dynamic and inclusive part of school life, where every child is encouraged to see themselves as a historian. From Snowy Owls through to Eagle Owls, we follow a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum that inspires curiosity, deepens understanding and nurtures a lifelong interest in the past.

Our history curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge, skills and historical thinking so that they become confident investigators, critical thinkers and informed citizens. Through progressive learning, children explore a diverse range of periods, people and places, gaining a secure understanding of chronology and the complexity of human experience. Pupils learn to appreciate how the past has shaped the world they live in today, developing respect for different cultures, perspectives and historical interpretations.

History lessons are engaging, enquiry-led and rooted in rich sources. Children build historical understanding through examining artefacts, exploring primary and secondary sources, asking thoughtful questions, and constructing well-reasoned explanations. A strong emphasis is placed on developing disciplinary skills such as evidence analysis, cause and consequence, change and continuity, and significance. These skills enable pupils to think critically about the past and understand that history is constructed and open to interpretation.

We are committed to ensuring that all children have access to meaningful historical experiences. Pupils take part in visits to local historical sites, museums and heritage locations, enriching their understanding of the past in authentic and memorable ways. Visitors, workshops and immersive experiences bring history to life, helping children to connect their learning to real people, places and events.

Our rich history offer is enhanced by opportunities for pupils to engage in cross-curricular learning, linking historical knowledge with geography, art, literature and citizenship. Children develop their communication skills through discussion, debate and extended writing, learning to express their ideas clearly, confidently and with historical accuracy.

Celebration of learning is an important part of our approach. Pupils share their historical understanding through class assemblies, exhibitions and themed days. These experiences help children to develop pride in their achievements, confidence in presenting their ideas and a sense of belonging within the school and wider community.

Through history, pupils also develop essential transferable skills, including critical thinking, research, empathy, communication and the ability to evaluate evidence. By the time our Eagle Owls leave us, they have not only developed strong historical knowledge and disciplinary understanding, but also a deep appreciation of history as a powerful tool for understanding themselves, others and the world around them.
