Science
At Allithwaite, science is central to how children understand and engage with the world around them. From Snowy Owls through to Eagle Owls, we follow the Developing Experts scheme to ensure a coherent, progressive and high-quality science curriculum that builds knowledge, skills and confidence over time.

Our science curriculum is designed to raise attainment, enrich subject knowledge and embed a strong real-world purpose. Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts while being introduced to how science is used beyond the classroom. Children learn about real-life STEM professionals and see how science is applied across a range of industries, helping them to understand its relevance, raise aspirations and begin to imagine future possibilities from an early age.

We inspire pupils by nurturing curiosity and encouraging them to ask thoughtful questions about our wonderful world. Science lessons are practical, engaging and enquiry-led, providing regular opportunities to work scientifically by observing, investigating, experimenting and drawing conclusions. Children are supported to learn from mistakes, test ideas and reflect on outcomes, developing resilience, critical thinking and confidence in using accurate scientific vocabulary.

Science learning extends far beyond discrete lessons. Pupils benefit from a wide range of enrichment opportunities, including farm visits, caring for and observing eggs hatching, visits to planetariums, and trips to places such as Glasgow Science Centre and Dynamic Earth

In Years 5 and 6, pupils also take part in termly science lessons at Cartmel Priory Secondary School, led by Mrs White. Here, children experience Key Stage 3-style science lessons, work with specialist equipment and develop laboratory skills, supporting high aspirations and ensuring a confident and smooth transition to secondary school.

By the time our Eagle Owls leave us, pupils see themselves as scientists — curious, knowledgeable and enthusiastic learners who are ready to explore, question and engage with the world around them.
