Art and Design at Allithwaite Primary
At Allithwaite our Art & Design curriculum covers the Early Learning Goals and the requirements of the English National Curriculum and is developed from the Access Art Primary School Curriculum:
Designed around the idea that art is far more than a series of technical skills, our holistic curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure that children learn through art, as well as about art.
‘The Access Art Curriculum asks: “What is the purpose of art?”. We answer through creating opportunities for children to explore many different aspects of making, helping both children and teachers understand the ways art connects us with our past, helps us embrace the present, and empowers us to shape our future. By exploring why art is relevant to all our lives, we aim to make certain that children feel entitled to develop their creativity, and understand their place in the world as creative, confident beings.’
At Allithwaite learning is built through a weaving and layering and revisiting of experiences. We have chosen to adapt the AccessArt curriculum , so that it reflects our school values; it is about OPENING UP what art is, giving children lots of different kinds of opportunities and experiences (media, techniques, approaches, artists), all underpinned by creative use of drawing and sketchbooks.
The pathways to learning encompass many different aspects of Art & design and are based around the following five areas of exploration:
We believe that meaningful learning happens through exploration and experimentation. Through curiosity, and self-expression, we aim for children to develop not only artistic skills but also creative thinking, visual literacy, and confidence in their own ideas By focusing on the process rather than simply the end result, children are encouraged to engage deeply with a variety of materials, disciplines, and techniques—from drawing and painting to sculpture and printmaking—building confidence, creativity, and critical thinking.
At the heart of the AccessArt approach is the belief that art education helps children understand themselves, others, and the world around them; by engaging with a diverse range of artists, designers, and makers, children learn to appreciate different perspectives and recognise their place within a wider creative community. Art becomes a process of enquiry, reflection, and discovery, enabling pupils to develop their own voice and identity as creative learners.
